چکیده

Two-dimensional echocardiography and pulsed-Doppler studies have not proved to be reliable methods of assessing left-to-right shunt size in atrial septal defect. Doppler color-flow imaging displays the transatrial jet, providing a new dimension with the potential capability of quantifying left-to-right shunt size. Twenty-three patients with atrial septal defect were studied by color-flow imaging and cardiac catheterization. The defect size measured by two-dimensional echocardiography, the maximal color-flow jet width in the atrial septum, and the maximal color-flow jet area in the right atrium were correlated with cardiac catheterization-derived left-to-right shunt size. Correlation coefficients were 0.57 (p<0.01), 0.67 (p<0.001), and 0.65 (p15 mm in all). These results indicate that Doppler color-flow imaging can distinguish left-to-right shunt size in atrial septal defect accurately enough to influence decisions with regard to subsequent patient management. Integrated Percutaneous Atrial Septal Defect Occlusion and Pulmonary Balloon Valvuloplasty

Introduction: Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) is one of the most common congenital heart diseases during childhood. Today, ASD closure is done by occlutech device via cardiac catheterization. ASD repair with transcatheter technique has shown high closure rate. However, coexistence of severe pulmonary stenosis and large defect in atrial septum is rare. When these two problems coexist, the result is i...

Detection of atrial septal defect with left-to-right shunt by inferior vena cava contrast echocardiography.

Contrast echocardiography was used before cardiac catheterisation in 37 patients with atrial septal defect and a left-to-right shunt and in 18 patients with a raised right atrial and ventricular pressure to assess the contrast echo effect in the inferior vena cava. Using two dimensional contrast apical echocardiography we found a negative contrast echo effect within the right atrium in many but...

Functional and anatomical correlates in atrial septal defect. An echocardiographic analysis.

The results of cross sectional echocardiography, intracardiac contrast echocardiography, and balloon sizing techniques and conventional haemodynamic assessment were correlated in 40 consecutive patients evaluated for an isolated left to right shunt at atrial level. Echo free areas along the septum were identified in 23 of 25 patients with a secundum defect, but not in two with a fenestrated def...

Non-invasive assessment of isolated atrial defects.

This study attempts to predict the size of shunt in secundum atrial septal defects by non-invasive M-mode echocardiography. The areas under the excursions of the mitral and tricuspid valves were measured with a sonic digitiser and the ratio of these areas compared with the shunt size as obtained at c'atheterisation. The relation between the mitral and tricuspid valve areas in patients with atri...

Holt-Oram Syndrome: A Rare Variant

Holt-Oram syndrome is an autosomal dominant disorder, characterised by skeletal abnormalities of the upper limb associated with congenital heart defect, mainly atrial and ventricular septal defects. Skeletal defects exclusively affect the upper limbs in the preaxial radial ray distribution and are bilateral and asymmetrical. They range from clinodactyly, absent or digitalised thumb, hypoplastic...
